By Christina Ham; Directed by Faye M. Price

The Story: Born in the Jim Crow South, Nina Simone became one of the most vocal musicians of the Civil Rights Movement with her signature combination of classical jazz and social awareness. Set in the 16th Street Church in Birmingham in the immediate aftermath of the bombing in 1963 which killed 4 young girls, we meet Simone as she reaches her decision to start exposing the violence and pain of the Black American struggle for Civil Rights with her music. Regina Marie Williams stars as the troubled and influential singer-songwriter who broke barriers and rules while Jamila Anderson, Aimee K. Bryant and Traci Allen Shannon star as three of the four women Simone describes in her ground-breaking song. Local musical treasure Sanford Moore accompanies these performers as they bring Nina and her journey to life. Your social studies and music students will witness the power of music to tell the human story as Simone the musician and activist come vividly to life in this deeply moving musical play.
