By Mat Smart

Historical Drama / Regional Premiere
Proscenium Stage

Recommended Grade Level: 7-12

Suggested Area of Study and Discussion: The Women’s Suffrage Movement, Black Voting Rights, Susan B. Anthony, Frederick Douglass, Reconstruction Era Politics, The Constitution, Current Issues in America, Contemporary Activists and Agitators, Civil Rights, Biography

The Story: Based on the deep and fiery friendship between Frederick Douglass and Susan B. Anthony, this powerful piece chronicles the pivotal points in the Abolitionist and Suffrage Movements from 1849 to 1895. Fiercely allied and then bitterly divided by the needs of their respective causes, their 45-year friendship chronicles the abolitionist movement, the passing of the 15th Amendment, and the long road to voting rights for women. You and your students will be haunted by how relevant their discussions are to the struggle for equality we still find ourselves in today in both race relations and equal rights for women. From the Civil War to changing the Constitution, they inspire us.

Performance Length: 2 ½ hours (Including Intermission)

Location: Park Square’s Proscenium Stage
