EDUCATION MATINEE 2018-19 – Antigone

Feb 6 – 28, 2019

By Sophocles
Adapted and Directed by MJ (Meagan) Kedrowski
Created with the Ensembles
Andy Boss Thrust Stage

Recommended Grade Level: 8–12

The Setting: Thebes

Suggested Areas of Study and Discussion: Greek Drama, Mythology, The Theban Cycle, Tragedy, Civil War, Women’s Studies, Civil Disobedience, Familial Beliefs and Traditions, Ritual, Equity and Inclusion, Devised Work

The Story: This bold and beautiful adaptation of Sophocles’ Antigone brings all of the offstage scenes from the original story onstage. In these scenes, we see Antigone with her siblings in a more peaceful time. We see family connections turn to jealousies and then into political rivalries, and finally erupt into Civil War. In addition to building spectacle, emotion, and mood, this productions uses the Greek chorus, through movement and live underscoring, to create visceral images of war, grief, despair, and ritual. Your students will love Antigone’s passionate dedication to truth and will identify with her struggle to get the adults around her to seek morality in the face of an uncompromising and unjust government.

Performance Length: 1 hour and 40 minutes (No Intermission)

Location: Park Square’s Andy Boss Thrust Stage
